History of Teekoy Grama Panchayat

Teekoy Grama Panchayat is a hilly Grama Panchayat situated in Meenachil Taluk of Kottayam District, Kerala. Spread across the foothills of the Western Ghats, the region is known for its natural beauty, agriculture, plantation crops and communal harmony.

In earlier times, the Teekoy region was predominantly covered by forests. Later, as part of migration and settlement, people from different parts of the region came to Teekoy, settled here and began agricultural activities. The cultivation of rubber, pepper, cardamom, coconut, coffee and other agricultural crops contributed significantly to the economic development of the region. The hills, streams and small rivers add to the natural beauty of the area.

Following the establishment of the local self-government system in Kerala, Teekoy Grama Panchayat emerged as an important institution for local administration and rural development. The Panchayat has played a significant role in implementing programmes related to rural development, infrastructure, education, healthcare, sanitation, drinking water supply and social welfare.

At present, Teekoy Grama Panchayat is divided into 14 wards. Through Gram Sabhas, the Panchayat ensures public participation in the planning and implementation of various development programmes. Along with agricultural development and conservation of natural resources, the Panchayat has also been undertaking initiatives to utilise the tourism potential of the region.

The history of Teekoy Grama Panchayat is a story of the growth and transformation of a hilly rural community closely connected with nature, agriculture and people-oriented development. Today, Teekoy continues to work towards social development, education, healthcare and infrastructure development while preserving its natural and cultural heritage.
